One early morning on the train south to Bangkok I was watching the rice fields roll past when on the horizon
came a brilliant flash. A country Wat had caught the sun and exploded into light.
In Bangkok the Wats are just as abundant but usually not quite as spectacular. They don't blend into the city
but are a counterpoint to more modern architecture. Wats provide a bit of shade and peace in the middle of the city,
and are a center of social life for the city dwellers. Bangkok is like thousands of overlapping villages and some people travel quite long distances to get to their wat.
